PoE 2 Boss Guide: Blackjaw, The Remnant Strategy & Drops

Last Updated: December 16, 2025 • By phoenixalfonse

Blackjaw, The Remnant is a colossal Vaal automaton boss encountered in Jiquani's Machinarium, a forgotten workshop within the jungles of Act 3. This hulking war golem is a relic of a bygone era, reactivated by the seeping corruption. The fight is a brutal battle against a juggernaut of stone and steel, testing a player's ability to dodge devastating physical blows and a lethal energy beam.

Lore & Background

He has a stone-like humanoid body with dragon features. He wields a massive mace and can breathe fire, making him a formidable opponent with his powerful slams, long-range fire attacks, and unpredictable tail strikes. In the first phase, Black Jaws will start with his "Rockshatter Slam": he raises the mace high and then brings it down forcefully, creating a shockwave in the target area. To counter this attack, you need to watch for his wind-up animation and roll to avoid the shockwave. Additionally, you should be alert as he may follow up with another slam, so stay ready to roll again to dodge.

Now, centuries later, the corruption has re-energized its power core. It awakens not with programming, but with a singular, primal directive: to annihilate any organic life that trespasses in its forge. It is a remnant of Vaal ambition, a walking siege engine with no army to lead.

Core Mechanics

When entering the second phase, his attacks will become more fierce and deadly. One of his new skills is Aerial Smash, where he leaps into the air and then swings his mace with greater force to slam down on the ground, dealing wider area damage and higher harm. To counter this skill, you need to quickly sidestep and move in the direction he will land.

Phase 1

  • 1. Stonebreaker Slam
Description: Blackjaw Swings a huge wolf-tooth mace fiercely, creating a shockwave in the target area that deals massive damage.
Strategy:Once you see Blackjaw start to charge an attack, immediately roll away from the marked area.
  • 2. Breath of Fire
Description: The Blackjaw will spew a flame breath, dealing fire damage.
Strategy: Staying mobile can help you dodge the breath attack, so keep a distance from the boss.
  • 3. Stomp Shockwave
Description: Blackjaw stomps its foot, creating a point-blank shockwave that knocks players back.
Strategy: This is an anti-melee mechanic. Back away when it lifts its leg.

Phase 2

  • 1. Leap and Slash
Description: The Blackjaw will leap high and then slam down onto the ground, doubling their power, increasing their attack range, and dealing massive damage.
Strategy: When the Blackjaw creature jumps, quickly move in the opposite direction to avoid it. You can carefully observe its landing spot to dodge.
  • 2. Flame Axe
Description: The Blackjaw creature breathed fire onto his weapon, then swung it in a large arc, attacking the player in front with a fiery slash.
Strategy: Stay out of the front attack range of the Blackjaw. Keeping a sufficient distance can help you avoid this damage.

Recommended Builds

Blackjaw is slow and heavily armored. Armor penetration or elemental damage is key.

  • Monk - Celerity: As seen in the official Monk demo, high mobility allows you to easily dash behind the boss to avoid its frontal slams and the devastating Annihilation Beam.
  • Sorceress - Lightning/Cold: Elemental damage bypasses Blackjaw's heavy armor. Chilling the boss can slow its already deliberate attacks even further.
  • Key Stats: Chaos Resistance is mandatory for surviving the beam and floor mechanics. High Armour helps mitigate the physical slams.
