PoE 2 Boss Guide: The King in the Mists Strategy & Drops

Last Updated: November 28, 2025 • By phoenixalfonse

The King in the Mists is a deceptive and optional boss encountered in the Freythorn region of Act 1 in Path of Exile 2. Known as the master of the Viridian Wildwood, he forces exiles to participate in his twisted rituals. Unlike brute-force encounters, this fight is a test of awareness, requiring you to strictly obey his commands or suffer debilitating punishments. He later returns as a much more powerful Pinnacle Boss in the endgame.

Lore & Background

An ancient figure twisted by the Viridian Wildwood, The King in the Mists was the primary antagonist of the Affliction League. He commands the corruption of the forest, using ritualistic magic to bind and drain his victims.

In Act 1, he appears as a shadowy shaman guarding the secrets of Spirit. Defeating him here is optional but highly recommended, as he guards a permanent upgrade to your character's power. He is not truly defeated in the campaign; he retreats to the Crux of Nothingness, awaiting challengers in the endgame.

Core Mechanics

To summon him in Act 1, you must first complete 3 Ritual Altars scattered across the Freythorn map. Once completed, the final arena in the center becomes accessible.
The fight revolves around the "Red Light, Purple Light" mechanic. Ignoring these commands is fatal.

The Ritual Commands

  • 1. Ritual of Dance (Purple Light)
Description: The King shouts "Keep running!" or "Rith!".
Strategy: You must keep moving. If you stand still for more than a split second, you will be inflicted with a stacking debuff that slows and eventually roots you, making you an easy target for his slams.
  • 2. Ritual of Meditation (Red Light)
Description: The King shouts "You are seen!" or "The end of meaning is nigh!". A deep red eye symbol marks you, and a UI icon with a "standing man" displays.
Strategy: You must stop moving immediately. Any movement (walking or using travel skills) will cause massive damage and stun you.
  • 3. Channel Ritual
Description: When the BOSS's health drops to 70% and 40%, chant: 'Doradas ert, thek thuram!'
Strategy: Prioritize destroying the altar to interrupt its summoning

Boss Attacks

  • 1. Affliction Totems
Description: He summons a dark wooden totem that pulses with chaos energy.
Strategy: Priority Target. These totems apply a debuff that increases the damage you take (Shadow Surge). Destroy them immediately, or the damage from other mechanics will become one-shot lethal.
  • 2. Thorngrip Vines
Description: The King raises his staff and sends a cone of purple thorns erupting from the ground in front of him.
Strategy: This is a frontal cone attack. When you see him raise his staff high, Dodge Roll behind him.
  • 3. Exploding Toads
Description: He fires a slow-moving purple orb that explodes on impact, leaving a zone of chaos damage.
Strategy: Bait the orb to the edge of the arena and roll away before it lands. Do not stand in the resulting puddle.

Endgame Notes: When fighting him in 'The Void Spire' (map Boss), he will enter a phase 2 , transforming into a bizarre hybrid of a treant and a wolf. Be mindful of his stun skills, observe his attack patterns, and use items that increase stamina recovery speed, as you will need to dodge attacks frequently. This will allow you to defeat him.

Recommended Builds

Mobility and controlled bursts are key to surviving his Rituals.

  • Ranger - Barrage/Lightning Arrow: High mobility allows you to easily comply with "Ritual of Dance" while dealing damage from a safe distance.
  • Mercenary - Crossbow: Being able to shoot while moving (Wasd movement) makes the "Keep Running" phase trivial. Just remember to stop firing immediately during "Meditation".
  • Key Stats: Chaos Resistance is helpful if you can find it early, but Movement Speed is your best defense.
